Rita Maia

Club DJ, broadcaster, producer and award winning director Rita Maia spreads her work between music and film. London based, Lisbon born with Goan family background, her work diversifies from radio broadcasting previously at Gilles Peterson Worldwide FM with her show Migrant Sounds also presented live on stage at festivals, a Red Bull Radio series of shows from Portuguese Speaking countries - Angola to Brazil, Mocambique, Sao Tome, Guine Bissau, Cabo Verde and Portugal, having initially started at Resonance FM with her show and compilation Sine Of The Times album of the month at Mixmag, Dj Mag and Rough Trade East London shop when it came out. As a DJ travelling extensively, establishing several residencies over the years and performing regularly both in London from the legendary Jazz Café, Village Underground, Tate Modern to Lisbon at Lux or Sonar Festival and a regular at Worldwide Festival in Sete while also programming stages and curating her Rita Maia presents Boiler Room Lisbon with several artists. All this leading to directing/presenting a short doc for Vinyl Factory as the intro to a bigger piece to come, Maia’s first award winning full length music documentary Lisbon Beat premiered and highlighted at Sheffield Doc. and London ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts) in a sold out session extending two extra weeks in the capital and sparking the commercial release in UK cinemas followed by festivals all over the world as well as touring showcasing the music in the film. During lock down taking over The Barbican’s Instagram, with a commissioned short film and music filmed at the unique conservatory setting on a collaboration with Choreographer and dancer Mary Feliciano and Antena 3 live session with Cape Verdean singer Sara Tavares, as well as contributing to the brilliant BBC radio 4 Black Music in Europe: A Hidden History documentary series and recently showcasing in various places from Brazil to Cape Verde and her film joining Quincy Jones Qwest Tv, while presently working on a new music project.
